Your first cruise can feel overwhelming before you board. This guide covers everything you need to plan confidently.
What Is Included in a Cruise Fare?
Included: cabin, all main dining room meals, buffet, entertainment, pool and gym access. Not included: specialty restaurants, alcohol, shore excursions, spa, gratuities (typically $15-20/person/day), and Wi-Fi.
Best Cruise Lines for First-Timers
Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian are all excellent first-cruise choices — large ships, enormous variety, competitive pricing, and very good main dining. Carnival and Norwegian are strongest on value. Royal Caribbean has the most impressive ships.
Interior vs. Balcony Cabin
Interior cabins are 30-50% cheaper than balcony cabins. For a first cruise, an interior cabin is perfectly comfortable — you spend very little time in your cabin. Upgrade to a balcony on your second cruise.
Getting the Best Price
Book during Wave Season (January-March) for the best deals. Book early for peak summer sailings. Watch for “kids sail free” promotions if travelling with children.
